sunroom retreat

A week or so ago I mentioned a sunroom redo (here) given our recent room change up.  The sunroom was originally a man room which I posted a design board about here, but after months of limited use, we decided that wasn't the ideal arrangement.  It's the first room you enter from the back of the house so it's critical it's pretty yet functional and flows with the rest of our home.  Sooooo, I scooped up a couple of antique french chairs at one of our local consignment malls that I had been eyeing for quite some time (note:  the price was marked as firm, but I still got a deal..whoop whoop!) and the vision grew from there.  Here's the vision.  I see this as a retreat.  A pretty place to pray, to rest, to read, to work, or to practice yoga :).  A place to love! What do think?!  P.S. Aren't my chairs pretty ;)

boosting the curb appeal

To add a little more umph (is that really a word?) to our front step, I've been dying to add a lantern.  I ordered this one and am now just waiting for our contractor to come install it.  In the meantime, here's a little mock up for those of you who enjoy visuals as much as I do :).  We've also added some jasmine to spruce up the black railings, but I'm afraid it may be on it's way to dying so we'll likely be replanting this spring :(.   I'll be sure to post an updated picture once it's installed, so stay tuned!

this little light of mine...

Keeping with the "brass is back" theme and because I have lighting on my mind (our kitchen is in need of some help in that department as well as our hall bath), here are some favorites I've found while browsing…

new look (round 2)

What do you think about the new look?!  I know, I know, it keeps changing.  I wasn't expecting my logo to be ready so soon, but once it was, you know I had to make some changes to the look of the blog :).  Thanks again to all of my readers and happy Saturday!

forever young

Raise your hand if you ever scoot on over to Forever 21 to feel extra young again?!  {Insert raised hand}, but I choose the online shopping version.   And often times, I find some pretty cute things!  I actually like the Love 21 line which runs a little larger (thank goodness) than Forever 21 sizing.  Here are some goodies I found during my last reminisce/"forever young"  sesh :).

a little leverage

As I had mentioned in the storm door makeover post, we did still need to reinstall a door handle for the project to be fully complete.  But because I was going brass (brass is back baby!) as opposed to the original nickel, we had to wait a few days for it to arrive (ordered through here).  With only a few installation hiccups (typical for Gray and I), we had it up and running.  I do still need to paint the interior of the storm door but that's for another day, another weekend :).

lil' man's room

Now that we've moved Avett into his new room (see yesterday's post), I felt that I could finally design a true kid's room.  I always struggled with making his old room too "kiddy" since it would need to serve as a guest room at times (side note:  Avett never seemed to mind this, but the hubby liked to give me a hard time about it ;)), but now with the new room rearrangement, I'm excited that he can finally get his lil' boy room.  This style board was inspired by his two favorite colors (can you guess what they are?!).  I'll post an after picture in the coming weeks so stay tuned!

introducing our new found guest room (and deer head)

We've been playing a little musical rooms in our home lately as we try to figure out how best to optimize the space we have.  Our home has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a sunroom.  Originally, we had Avett in the larger of the two spare rooms, the office located in the smallest bedroom, and used the sunroom as a second living area (i.e., "man room").  After living with this arrangement for 6 months or so, we decided it wasn't the ideal.  Why? 1) We had no guest room;  2) We weren't utilizing the sunroom as we thought we would; and 3) Avett is rarely in his room (except when he sleeps) so him in the largest spare room seemed like a wasted space (plus the smaller room is much more cozy for a 5 year old :)).  So, we did a little switch-a-woo!  And, here's our new guest room which is designed based off of my "big boy room" styleboard from a while back.  I'm really loving how the space is coming together and especially love the addition of our newest "family member" :).  Our faux deer head (and mounting plaque/shield) came from a phenomanal Etsy shop  ("NearAndDeer") who will custom make your piece exactly to your liking!  Check em' out!

I'll be sharing design ideas for Avett's new room in a future post as well as what we'll do with the sunroom so stay tuned!

first impressions

Back about 6 months ago, do you remember when I blogged about painting our front door?  No?  Well here's a reminder for you :).  Over the last 6 months, I have gone back and forth and back again.  I went from blue to yellow to plum back to blue and finally pulled the trigger over the weekend.  Here's a picture of our house when we bought it back in November of last year…

And here are a couple up close pictures from this weekend before the painting started…

After much deliberation (and after my husband and son refused to hold up another swatch), I landed on Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue.  It's actually more of a green than a blue (surprising since I never really considered green), but my inspiration came from RenĂ© Zieg's house house over on Cottage and Vine.

So I painted (Tip:  I used Benjamin Moore's Patio & Floor Latex Paint which was recommended to me as a great no sheen yet extremely durable option).  And after a couple hours, I stepped back to check out the finished product.  I liked it….but something was off.

The black storm door!  So the wooden storm door research began and I found they were near impossible to find in our area (i.e., I'd likely have to pay an arm and a leg to get one custom made, delivered, and installed) so on to plan B.  Remove the storm door.  Nope….hubby wasn't agreeing to that, and I too like having it.  So, I started researching how to paint a metal storm door.  Based on some, it was quite a process (take the door off, sand the door, clean the door, spray paint with metal primer, spray paint with metal paint, dry, put door back on...), but then I found this blog. And after a quick trip to Lowe's for some Kilz primer and taping off the door, I was ready to prime.  Here's a picture of the primed door.

I then took a brief dry-time break and colored with my little man :),  painted a couple coats of my latex paint (the exact same paint I used on the front door), and VOILA!

Who knew painting a storm door could be so easy?!  And what a difference it made!  (Side note:  For you extremely detail-oriented peeps, the door handle is on order.  We did have a silver one, but I wanted to go with a brass to match our knob on the main door. :))

metal mix a lot

Hey friends!  I'm going to skip the part where I try to explain why I haven't blogged in over a month (started a new job, had a standstill in home projects, went on vacation, etc., etc.) and get right to the fun stuff :).  If you remember from past posts (here and here), slowly we've been working on making some updates to our very small quaint hall bathroom.  We had the marble and sink installed, but haven't really done much since.  That doesn't mean I haven't been busy brainstorming though :).  I'm on this mixed metal kick which I would love to incorporate into this little space.  Here's what I'm thinking…

What are your thoughts on mixing metals?  Love it or hate it?
