life/blog update plus recent bonus room design

Let me start by apologizing for my recent blog post frequency which has been spotty at best; life continues to try to creep into this passion of mine.  Problem is, I don't see it slowing down any time soon.  Between my new (5ish months) "real" job, my son starting kindergarten and actually now having homework, and my personal and client design projects, the blog seems to get pushed down to the bottom of the list.  I'll still continue to maintain the blog as best I can and try to share some design projects and style inspiration along the way, but I can't say I'll be able to post like I wish I could.  I know you all understand and for that I am grateful :)!!  Thank you thank you thank you for being my fans, my friends, and my supporters!

With that, I wanted to share a recent design board I did for a friend who was wanting to create an escape for her husband.  I can't say I wouldn't like to escape to this room right now :).

What do you think?  Need help styling a space?  Contact me, and I'll be happy to assist!

wishin' and hopin'

I've never been one that has struggled to make a Christmas list (I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing…I'm thinking bad) but that doesn't mean I don't LOVE buying for others.  I've been sneakingly listening to my family over the last months and have a good start on my gift giving list ;).  As such, I thought I'd make it super easy on my family (Hey, Gray.  Are you listening?!  ;)), and share my "want" list :).  Many of these goodies you've seen in prior posts!

makeover monday

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook you've seen some shots of our #sunroomredo which is finally coming together (and if you don't follow me, please do :)).  I have to say, the room is quickly becoming one of my favorites in our home.  It's just so bright and happy, and I love it!  Here's a link to the style board I had originally put together for the space.  One of the key pieces in the room is a love seat that I had made over, and I am THRILLED with how it turned out.  It's a high quality piece, made by Hickory Chair which I am so grateful to have inherited from my mom.  To be such a little guy, he is super heavy which just goes to show how well made it is.  Definitely one of those pieces that is worth a redo.  Here's a before picture…

When I decided that I wanted to make it over and use it in our sunroom, I knew I had to give it a little different look.  It was just a little too "dinky"/short looking and especially for my sunroom which has 9 foot ceilings.  Thanks to my fabulous upholsterer, my vision was executed flawlessly.  What I asked for was:

1) Remove skirt
2) Split the seat cushion into two cushions and make them more substantial (I wanted more height.)
3) Split the back cushion into two cushions and make them more substantial (Again, we needed height.)
4) Contrast welting

And this is how it turned out….

Amazing, right!!  It doesn't even look like the same piece!  And the fabric…ahhhh…I'm in love!  I found it at Shelby Fabrics; my new go to place for all my fabric needs :).

Here it is installed in our sunroom….

I still have some finishing touches to put on the room but am just loving it so far.

So, what do you think?!  Moral of the story is…don't steer away from a "dinky" piece of furniture, especially when it's a high quality piece.  AND, find an awesome upholsterer who can execute on your vision :).  Need help creating that vision?!  Reach out…I'd love to help you find and/or design that new special piece for your home!  xoxo

The cooler temps and the buzz of football have me anticipating fall (my all time favorite season)!!  Just as we change up our wardrobe for the new season, it's important to give your home some love too.    Here are some great options from Target (is it just me or does Target just keep getting better and better?!) for changing your home up a bit and adding a little fall to the indoors….

aged and lovely

Hi friends!  Sorry for the lack of posts or even updates over the last week or so.  Sometimes life takes an unexpected twist and we adjust as best we can.  The last week has been one of those times as I  have prepared to say goodbye to my beloved grandmother.  Thanks for supporting me along the way!  In honor of her, I'm sharing some old and beautiful items I found on Etsy.  Warning:  The prices are not necessarily the best, but it gives you an idea of some fun pieces you could be on the lookout for while thrifting (example:  I recently found a working princess phone (and yes, we do have a home number) for only $25!) :).

sweet dreams

I've been dreaming of a master bedroom redesign (here's a post about our current one in case you missed it), but first, I gotta wrap up our sunroom makeover (click here to hear me talking about that).  We're making progress though, on the sunroom that is, and I can't wait to share the final product with you!  In the meantime, I'll keep dreamin' and design boardin' :).  Here's what I'm thinking (today at least)….

Do you need help designing a space but are on a low budget?  A design board is a great option!  Contact me for all the details :).

summer send-off

In honor of a great summer, I had to send it off in style!  This is a BIG summer-end for us, as we prepare for our "little one" to start kindergarten (tear). And in case you were wondering (I sure was), the first day of fall is September 23rd :).

another master style board

Do you remember this style board from a while back?  Well, here's an updated one based on the actual nightstands, mirrors, and lamps that were selected.  This style board focuses on pillows (I'm pretty obsessed with this fabric) and wall prints.  We're still on the hunt for the right size prints, but these at least give an idea of what may work.

Monday sounds like the perfect day to talk progress and thank goodness we've made some :).  Here's a sneak peek of Avett's new room which is on its way to being complete (I shared the style board here)…

So what's left to do?

1) Paint
2) Style Bookshelves
3) Find Lamp for Nightstand
4) Install Light Fixture for Overhead
5) Order Art for Wall

Stay tuned for a final look!

And our sunroom progress (style board here)…

It doesn't look like much, but the first step was to unload and we did a lot of that this weekend!  Our new desk, chair, and coffee table should arrive over the next few weeks so stay tuned!

sunroom retreat

A week or so ago I mentioned a sunroom redo (here) given our recent room change up.  The sunroom was originally a man room which I posted a design board about here, but after months of limited use, we decided that wasn't the ideal arrangement.  It's the first room you enter from the back of the house so it's critical it's pretty yet functional and flows with the rest of our home.  Sooooo, I scooped up a couple of antique french chairs at one of our local consignment malls that I had been eyeing for quite some time (note:  the price was marked as firm, but I still got a deal..whoop whoop!) and the vision grew from there.  Here's the vision.  I see this as a retreat.  A pretty place to pray, to rest, to read, to work, or to practice yoga :).  A place to love! What do think?!  P.S. Aren't my chairs pretty ;)

boosting the curb appeal

To add a little more umph (is that really a word?) to our front step, I've been dying to add a lantern.  I ordered this one and am now just waiting for our contractor to come install it.  In the meantime, here's a little mock up for those of you who enjoy visuals as much as I do :).  We've also added some jasmine to spruce up the black railings, but I'm afraid it may be on it's way to dying so we'll likely be replanting this spring :(.   I'll be sure to post an updated picture once it's installed, so stay tuned!

this little light of mine...

Keeping with the "brass is back" theme and because I have lighting on my mind (our kitchen is in need of some help in that department as well as our hall bath), here are some favorites I've found while browsing…

new look (round 2)

What do you think about the new look?!  I know, I know, it keeps changing.  I wasn't expecting my logo to be ready so soon, but once it was, you know I had to make some changes to the look of the blog :).  Thanks again to all of my readers and happy Saturday!

forever young

Raise your hand if you ever scoot on over to Forever 21 to feel extra young again?!  {Insert raised hand}, but I choose the online shopping version.   And often times, I find some pretty cute things!  I actually like the Love 21 line which runs a little larger (thank goodness) than Forever 21 sizing.  Here are some goodies I found during my last reminisce/"forever young"  sesh :).

a little leverage

As I had mentioned in the storm door makeover post, we did still need to reinstall a door handle for the project to be fully complete.  But because I was going brass (brass is back baby!) as opposed to the original nickel, we had to wait a few days for it to arrive (ordered through here).  With only a few installation hiccups (typical for Gray and I), we had it up and running.  I do still need to paint the interior of the storm door but that's for another day, another weekend :).

lil' man's room

Now that we've moved Avett into his new room (see yesterday's post), I felt that I could finally design a true kid's room.  I always struggled with making his old room too "kiddy" since it would need to serve as a guest room at times (side note:  Avett never seemed to mind this, but the hubby liked to give me a hard time about it ;)), but now with the new room rearrangement, I'm excited that he can finally get his lil' boy room.  This style board was inspired by his two favorite colors (can you guess what they are?!).  I'll post an after picture in the coming weeks so stay tuned!

introducing our new found guest room (and deer head)

We've been playing a little musical rooms in our home lately as we try to figure out how best to optimize the space we have.  Our home has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a sunroom.  Originally, we had Avett in the larger of the two spare rooms, the office located in the smallest bedroom, and used the sunroom as a second living area (i.e., "man room").  After living with this arrangement for 6 months or so, we decided it wasn't the ideal.  Why? 1) We had no guest room;  2) We weren't utilizing the sunroom as we thought we would; and 3) Avett is rarely in his room (except when he sleeps) so him in the largest spare room seemed like a wasted space (plus the smaller room is much more cozy for a 5 year old :)).  So, we did a little switch-a-woo!  And, here's our new guest room which is designed based off of my "big boy room" styleboard from a while back.  I'm really loving how the space is coming together and especially love the addition of our newest "family member" :).  Our faux deer head (and mounting plaque/shield) came from a phenomanal Etsy shop  ("NearAndDeer") who will custom make your piece exactly to your liking!  Check em' out!

I'll be sharing design ideas for Avett's new room in a future post as well as what we'll do with the sunroom so stay tuned!

first impressions

Back about 6 months ago, do you remember when I blogged about painting our front door?  No?  Well here's a reminder for you :).  Over the last 6 months, I have gone back and forth and back again.  I went from blue to yellow to plum back to blue and finally pulled the trigger over the weekend.  Here's a picture of our house when we bought it back in November of last year…

And here are a couple up close pictures from this weekend before the painting started…

After much deliberation (and after my husband and son refused to hold up another swatch), I landed on Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue.  It's actually more of a green than a blue (surprising since I never really considered green), but my inspiration came from RenĂ© Zieg's house house over on Cottage and Vine.

So I painted (Tip:  I used Benjamin Moore's Patio & Floor Latex Paint which was recommended to me as a great no sheen yet extremely durable option).  And after a couple hours, I stepped back to check out the finished product.  I liked it….but something was off.

The black storm door!  So the wooden storm door research began and I found they were near impossible to find in our area (i.e., I'd likely have to pay an arm and a leg to get one custom made, delivered, and installed) so on to plan B.  Remove the storm door.  Nope….hubby wasn't agreeing to that, and I too like having it.  So, I started researching how to paint a metal storm door.  Based on some, it was quite a process (take the door off, sand the door, clean the door, spray paint with metal primer, spray paint with metal paint, dry, put door back on...), but then I found this blog. And after a quick trip to Lowe's for some Kilz primer and taping off the door, I was ready to prime.  Here's a picture of the primed door.

I then took a brief dry-time break and colored with my little man :),  painted a couple coats of my latex paint (the exact same paint I used on the front door), and VOILA!

Who knew painting a storm door could be so easy?!  And what a difference it made!  (Side note:  For you extremely detail-oriented peeps, the door handle is on order.  We did have a silver one, but I wanted to go with a brass to match our knob on the main door. :))

metal mix a lot

Hey friends!  I'm going to skip the part where I try to explain why I haven't blogged in over a month (started a new job, had a standstill in home projects, went on vacation, etc., etc.) and get right to the fun stuff :).  If you remember from past posts (here and here), slowly we've been working on making some updates to our very small quaint hall bathroom.  We had the marble and sink installed, but haven't really done much since.  That doesn't mean I haven't been busy brainstorming though :).  I'm on this mixed metal kick which I would love to incorporate into this little space.  Here's what I'm thinking…

What are your thoughts on mixing metals?  Love it or hate it?
